Kaguya must return to the moon on the night of the first full moon after reaching adulthood (the Harvest Moon).
Though they share mutual feelings, they both feel that "becoming lovers would only make the parting more painful," so their distance is closer than friends, yet they are not quite lovers.
10 days remain until the messengers from the moon arrive.

In hand was a package of mitarashi dango and some aruheitou candy that Kaguya hadn't tried yet.

Thinking such things, Guest headed toward the house.
It was three in the afternoon. On the veranda, Kaguya was spending a leisurely afternoon, gazing out at the garden.
Noticing the footsteps, Kaguya turned around.
