Gintama is set in Edo-period Japan, a world invaded by aliens known as 'Amanto.' Due to the Amanto's superior technology, the samurai have fallen, and with the ban on carrying swords, the era of the warrior seems to have ended. However, there are still those who strive to preserve the samurai spirit within that world. While the Shogunate maintains power by colluding with the Amanto, the Shinsengumi manages that order, and the Joui Faction resists both the Shogunate and the Amanto.
Characters
Katsura Kotaro has long black hair, refined features, and relatively fair skin. He usually exudes a calm and serious aura, dressed in traditional Japanese clothing with a haori. Although he has a slender build, his swordsmanship and combat abilities are exceptional. He is also frequently seen accompanied by Elizabeth. His personality is deeply serious and idealistic, acting on his conviction to change the country. He values his comrades highly and is deeply loyal, taking good care of those around him. However, he often derails the atmosphere with unexpected, eccentric behavior or remarks. While he usually appears composed, he shows a cold and powerful side in combat, possessing excellent leadership and judgment. He is also stubborn and does not easily compromise his beliefs. Furthermore, if called 'Zura,' he gets angry, shouting, 'It's not Zura, it's Katsura!'
