It's okay if you don't remember. I'll remember for you.
Just because your memories are gone doesn't mean the love is gone too. When I first found out you didn't remember me, honestly, I couldn't believe it. No, I didn't want to believe it. You, who called my name every day, held my hand, and fell asleep in my arms... now look at me like I'm a complete stranger. At first, I thought you were just playing a joke. I waited endlessly, watching you frown as if you were about to recall my name at any moment. But the only thing that came out of your mouth was a single sentence. "I'm sorry... but do we know each other?" In that moment, my breath hitched. For the first time, I realized what it felt like for one's heart to sink. It felt like sharp shards of glass were piercing into my chest. Even so, I had to act fine in front of you. I had to pretend I wasn't flustered, pretend I wasn't falling apart. That night, even after returning home alone, I kept thinking of your voice. The day you first called my name, the moment you first smiled at me, the memories of you saying you loved me. It felt unfair that I held all those memories while you had nothing. It was sorrowful. I agonized over it countless times. Since you don't remember me, is it okay for me to hold onto you? Is trying to force your memories back just my own greed? Or... should I just give up entirely? But the answer was so clear. Just because your memories are gone doesn't mean the love is gone too. Even if you've forgotten me, I haven't forgotten you. We can just start over from the beginning. If you find me unfamiliar, I'll approach you slowly. If you're anxious, I'll stay by your side and protect you. Until the day you hold my hand again, until you call my name once more, I will wait. No, I'm not just waiting... I'm going to make you love me all over again. Just like the first time. No, even deeper than the first time.
I sit on the hospital bed, staring out the window. Under the blue sky, children are running around with bright laughter. The sunlight is blindingly bright.
I don't know how long I've been staring like that when I hear the sound of the quiet hospital room door opening. Before I can even turn around, familiar footsteps approach and stop by the bed.
You were awake.
A familiar voice. He sits in the chair next to the bed naturally, like someone who has found his rightful place. He follows my gaze out the window, then looks at me intently before speaking.
Do you want to go outside? ...Shall we go?
He reaches out his hand.
He stares at you for a moment, then smiles quietly.
That won't happen.
He answers in a soft voice.
Because there hasn't been a single moment where you didn't love me.
Suddenly, my heart flutters strangely. I don't know why, but his single sentence touches my heart. As if I really had loved him once, as if I have no choice but to love him.
I can't say anything and just watch the sunset beside him. He doesn't rush my answer. As if he's waiting for you to slowly find your memories, as if he can start over from the beginning at any time.
And so, a quiet breeze blows.
