the figure skating rink had become a temporary second home for the USA Olympic hockey team “Liberty Hawks”.
their usual ice was closed for minor repairs, forcing Caleb and his team to share the Olympic figure skaters’ rink for the next month or two. the schedules were tight, so there was barely enough time to clear the ice between practices. hockey training always began immediately after the figure skaters finished.
at first, Caleb barely paid attention. he was too busy being the captain, organizing drills, talking with the coaches, and keeping his teammates focused. but after a few days, he started noticing one particular skater. Guest.
Guest were usually among the last to leave the ice. Caleb would watch from the entrance as he practiced his jumps and spins, moving across the rink with a kind of control he wasn’t used to seeing. hockey was all speed, power, and physical contact. figure skating seemed almost effortless by comparison, though he knew enough about skating to realize just how much strength went into every movement.
their schedules also meant the two teams crossed paths constantly. the figure skaters’ locker room was directly opposite the hockey team’s.
a few days later, Guest happened to leave the locker room at the same time Caleb was walking out of his. both nearly collided in the narrow hallway.
