Approximately 80% of the world's population possesses some kind of Quirk. [1] Quirks vary greatly in type and nature from person to person. While some are suited for combat—such as fire, explosions, physical transformation, enhanced physical abilities, or animalistic traits—others are useful for daily life or work. Consequently, Quirks are not exclusive to a few special individuals but are accepted as common physical characteristics that make up this society. The manifestation of a Quirk varies by individual and often appears in early childhood. Each Quirk has its own unique properties and limits, and using them can place a burden on the user's body or mind. To handle a Quirk safely, one must understand and properly control not only the strength of the ability but also its activation conditions, range, duration, recoil, and danger to the surroundings. Manifestation of Quirks and Social Change The first major report of a Quirk was the news of a "luminescent baby" born in Qing Qing City, China. Subsequently, supernatural phenomena were confirmed worldwide, and the number of people with Quirks increased. [2] The spread of Quirks brought significant changes to human society. Accidents caused by an inability to control Quirks and crimes exploiting them occurred, leading to discrimination, conflict, and confusion regarding the presence and nature of these abilities. However, over a long period, laws, education, medicine, and science were established, forming a social system predicated on Quirks. Today, possessing a Quirk is not unusual. While "Quirkless" individuals still exist, the concept of being Quirkless has not completely vanished from society. The presence and nature of abilities differ for everyone, and each person lives while coming to terms with their own Quirk and physical traits. The Hero Profession In this world, "Heroes" exist as a profession to protect people from criminals who exploit Quirks, as well as from accidents and disasters. Heroes are not merely celebrities or combatants; they are professionals who work to ensure social safety. Their duties include not only suppressing criminals using their Quirks but also rescuing citizens, responding to accidents and disasters, preventing the spread of damage, and securing the scene. [1] To arrest criminals or use a Quirk in public for life-saving or hazard removal, one must have a license or permit based on laws and regulations. Heroes who operate with official qualifications are generally called Pro Heroes. Pro Heroes establish agencies and, in cooperation with public institutions like the police, conduct patrols in their assigned areas, respond to incidents, perform rescue operations, and handle disasters. Ordinary citizens do not necessarily aim to be Heroes. They lead lives as office workers, students, civil servants, doctors, researchers, engineers, or shopkeepers, according to their own Quirks and aptitudes. When encountering a crime or accident, the basic rule for ordinary citizens is to prioritize evacuation and reporting rather than fighting the perpetrator on their own, waiting for the arrival of specialists like the police or Heroes. Pro Heroes receive social recognition based on their track record, contribution to solving incidents, and support from citizens. Hero Rankings also exist, with top-ranked Heroes possessing high name recognition and influence. However, a Hero's value is not determined by rank alone; rescue efforts, community contribution, and the accumulation of trust are also vital elements required of a Hero. Villains and Criminal Society "Villains" refers to those who exploit their Quirks for crime or acts of destruction. Villains are criminals who use their abilities to harm others or threaten social order, and they are targets for enforcement by Heroes and the police. Villainous activities range widely, including robbery, assault, kidnapping, terrorism, and sabotage. Since Quirks can be used for crime, investigation and arrest require not only standard police activity but also specialized knowledge to analyze Quirk properties and personnel/equipment capable of handling them. In this society, Heroes and police each fulfill their roles to respond to incidents caused by Villains. The peaceful daily life of citizens is maintained not because crime is non-existent, but through the legal system, public institutions, Heroes, and the cooperation of the citizens. U.A. High School U.A. High School is a prestigious institution known as one of Japan's leading Hero training schools. Centered around the Hero Course, students with Quirks study to become future Pro Heroes. Students like Izuku Midoriya acquire the skills to handle their Quirks and the responsibilities of a Hero through classes, training, internships, and school events at U.A. [1] In the Hero Course, they learn not only combat training using Quirks but also rescue operations, disaster response, situational judgment, teamwork, physical fitness, and Hero ethics and laws. What a Hero needs is not just the power to defeat enemies. They require comprehensive abilities to protect citizens, minimize damage, cooperate with allies, and make appropriate decisions on the scene. U.A. High School also has General Education, Support, and Management Courses. General Education provides schooling for standard university entrance or employment, while the Support Course focuses on developing equipment, technology, and support items to assist Hero activities. The Management Course covers the knowledge necessary for running Hero agencies and interacting with society. These departments support Hero society while fulfilling different roles. U.A.'s campus is equipped with training facilities designed for real-world scenarios and equipment for safely learning Quirk usage.
