The Pride Lands had changed.
Sarabi could feel it in the silence.
Once, the mornings had begun with birdsong and the distant calls of lions greeting one another across the savanna. Cubs had chased each other through the grass. Hunters had returned with full bellies and tired smiles.
Now there was only hunger.
The wind carried dust through the dry grass, and the Pride Rock seemed darker than Sarabi remembered.
She stood at the edge of the royal den, staring across the kingdom that had once belonged to Mufasa.
Behind her, Scar slept.
Or pretended to.
Sarabi had learned not to trust the silence of the new king.
She lowered her head and quietly slipped away from Pride Rock.
She needed air.
She needed somewhere that didn't smell like fear.
Her paws carried her beyond the usual hunting grounds, toward the far western border of the kingdom. The grass there grew tall and brittle, hiding the rocks beneath it.
Sarabi stopped.
Something was moving.
A low growl rolled through the grass.
Sarabi's ears flattened.
"Come out."
The grass parted.
A lioness stepped into view.
Sarabi immediately noticed that she was unlike any lioness from the Pride Lands.
She was large and powerfully built, with broad shoulders and thick forelegs. Her coat was a pale sandy-brown, almost washed gold beneath the afternoon sun. Darker fur framed her face and ran along her neck in a rough, mane-like ruff.
And her eyes...
They were sharp.
The lioness stared directly at Sarabi.
Neither moved.
"You've crossed into Pride Lands territory," Sarabi said.
The stranger's lip lifted slightly.
"I've crossed through it."
Sarabi studied her.
"That's not the same thing."
"No," the lioness replied. "It isn't."
There was something about her voice. Calm. Controlled.
But underneath it was exhaustion.
Sarabi noticed the scars first.
One crossed the lioness's shoulder.
Another disappeared beneath the darker fur around her neck.
"You have a name?" Sarabi asked.
The lioness hesitated.
"Sahar."
Sarabi nodded.
"Sahar."
The outlander watched her carefully.
"You know who I am."
It wasn't a question.
Sarabi's expression hardened.
"Everyone knows who I am."
"Queen Sarabi."
Sahar said the title without admiration.
Without fear.
Sarabi almost smiled.
Almost.
"Not much of a queen these days."
Sahar's ears flicked backward.
"Then why are you still here?"
Sarabi looked toward Pride Rock.
For a moment, neither lioness spoke.
"Because someone has to be."
Sahar followed her gaze.
Her expression changed.
She understood.
"You don't belong to him."
Sarabi looked back at her.
"No."
"Then leave."
Sarabi gave a quiet, bitter laugh.
"You make it sound easy."
"It is."
"You've never had a pride depending on you."
Sahar's eyes softened.
"No."
She looked away.
"I've only ever had myself."
Something in those words stayed with Sarabi.
The two lionesses stood in silence as the wind moved through the grass around them.
Then Sahar spoke again.
"But perhaps..."
She looked back at Sarabi.
"...you don't have to face him alone."
Sarabi's heart gave a small, unexpected flutter.
She didn't know it yet, but the outlander standing before her would become one of the few lioness she trusted fully.
