Nen: The ability to manipulate aura, the life energy flowing from the body, using the mind.
Enhancement: Specialized in strengthening the natural properties of an object. Most suited for close-quarters combat based on physical brawls. While it lacks technical versatility, it excels in attack, defense, and recovery, being simple and intuitive. (The abilities of Enhancers like Gon, Uvogin, and Phinks all differ in method, but frankly, they are all just punches packed with massive amounts of Nen. While it is the best type for physical strength, those of other types can still reach top-tier levels in physical combat.)
Emission: Specialized in detaching aura from the body. Basically involves firing aura as bullets, shells, or beams, or imbuing long-range projectiles with Nen. Abilities like clones, astral projection, teleportation, and spatial manipulation also fall under Emission because they require maintaining Nen in a 'detached state.' Normally, aura loses power when separated from the user, but Emitters maintain full power. In fact, handling aura away from the body can be more powerful than simple physical reinforcement.
Transmutation: Specialized in changing the shape or properties of one's aura. Since it uses the aura itself, ordinary people cannot see it, unlike Conjuration. Unlike Conjurers who must summon objects, Transmuters can immediately change their aura for attack. It is also possible to apply Nen techniques to the transmuted aura. In the series, Conjured objects have distinct physical forms, while Transmuted aura is drawn to look like aura even when its shape changes. The difficulty varies wildly by ability. Changing aura into harmless substances like Bungee Gum is relatively easy to learn, but changing it into natural elements like fire, ice, or electricity requires understanding the phenomenon with the body, not just the mind. Since the aura surrounding the body turns into the element, the user will be harmed unless they have resistance. Thus, training for such abilities often borders on torture.
Manipulation: Specialized in infusing aura into existing objects or living beings to control them. They are also skilled at precise aura control and are the best at imbuing physical objects with Nen. Manipulators have the advantage of giving complex commands or creating autonomous movements. This advantage also applies to nearby Emission or Specialization types; many Emitters control Nen beasts and Specialists control themselves or others because their proximity to Manipulation allows for high efficiency. It is divided into controlling inanimate objects and living beings, and the latter is further divided into controlling the mind (consciousness) versus just the body. Generally, the precision of control is inversely proportional to the number of entities controlled.
Conjuration: Specialized in giving physical form to aura or transforming existing objects into something else. A Conjurer can imbue their created items with Nen levels equal to a Manipulator. It may look similar to Manipulation since it involves matter and Nen, but Conjured items are created by the user and can be summoned anywhere; if destroyed, they can simply be summoned again. They can also be hidden using 'In.' Conjuration is categorized into three types. First is creating something that functions exactly like a real weapon or tool. However, this offers no merit other than the ability to summon/dismiss it. For example, one could conjure a very sharp sword, but it's more efficient to just buy a masterpiece sword and practice swordsmanship. Gheeto's crossbow is a good example.
Specialization: A catch-all category for abilities that cannot be explained by the other five types. It includes unique abilities that don't fit anywhere else. Confirmed Specialist-only traits include stealing others' Nen abilities and future sight. Unlike other types, if you aren't born with it, you have a 0% chance of using it. Lineage or special environments act as innate factors. For those who develop it later, it most commonly appears in those near the Manipulation or Conjuration categories. Statistically, Specialists make up only 0.033% of all Nen users, making it ultra-rare, and they are said to have no limits in mastering the other five types. For instance, a Transmuter struggles with Manipulation, but a Specialist has no weak category. There are even cases where a Specialist, unaware of their type, easily masters another category thinking it's their own, only to regret it later.
Water Divination is the method passed down by the Shingen-ryu school. A leaf (or anything that floats) is placed on a glass full of water, and the user performs Ren with their hands on the glass. The resulting change identifies the aura type. Enhancement: The volume of water changes. Emission: The color of the water changes. Manipulation: The leaf moves. Conjuration: Impurities appear in the water. Transmutation: The taste of the water changes. (In Killua's case, it becomes sweet.) Specialization: A change occurs that doesn't fit the other five.
Ten (Envelop): Everyone has life energy called aura, which unconsciously leaks out. Ten is the basic technique of keeping this aura within the body. Since aura surrounds the body like armor, defense increases, and as a side effect, it prevents aging by stopping the loss of life energy.
Zetsu (Null): Closes the micropores to completely stop aura from leaking. Since it minimizes energy loss, it aids recovery, and since aura is blocked, the user's presence disappears. However, because the aura used to strengthen the body is gone, the user becomes as vulnerable as a non-user; defense drops drastically. If hit by a Nen attack in this state, even a basic blow can be fatal. Thus, it is used for assassination, tailing, and ambushes rather than direct combat.
Ren (Enhance): Opens the micropores wide to generate more aura than usual. It brings out the user's maximum aura, explosively increasing combat power and Nen efficiency. However, it consumes stamina much faster due to the rapid aura depletion.
Hatsu (Release): The expression of one's Nen type ability. Strengthening something, changing aura properties, or manifesting something with Nen all fall under this. In short, it's a 'special move.' In a narrow sense, 'Nen ability' usually refers to Hatsu.
Nen after Death: Since Nen is the manifestation of life energy (aura), it usually disappears when the user dies. However, if a person harbors emotions so intense they cannot be forgotten even at the moment of death, the Nen ability may remain in the world. This is called Nen after Death.
Vows and Limitations: While basic Nen use makes one a superhuman compared to non-users, it may not be enough against another superhuman. To counter this, one can intentionally set limitations or perform illogical actions backed by strong belief (such as self-harm) to strengthen their Nen.
Collaborative Type: Also called Joint Type. Refers to Nen abilities that require another person besides the user to function. This includes abilities developed by two or more users together, or abilities used by one person that require another's aura. While there is a fatal risk of not being able to use Hatsu alone, the output is superior because it combines the aura of two or more people, and the risk itself acts as a 'limitation' that allows for performance closer to 1+1=3.
Nen Beast: A living creature created through Nen abilities.
Invincible Type: Does not take damage when specific conditions are met.
Enhancement: Simple and determined (stubborn) Transmutation: Whimsical and prone to lying Emission: Impatient and detail-averse Manipulation: Logical and marches to their own beat Conjuration: High-strung and nervous Specialization: Individualistic and charismatic
