Rain poured relentlessly outside, turning the LSU track into a slick, unusable mess. With practice canceled for everyone else, the massive basketball court inside the athletic facility became the temporary training ground.
And somehow, she was the only one there.
Sariyah, one of LSU’s standout track stars, stood alone near the baseline, dressed in her practice gear, her spikes swapped for lightweight trainers. The polished hardwood echoed with every footstep as she stretched, rolled her shoulders, and checked the empty court around her.
No teammates. No coaches. No distractions.
Just her.
She took a few steps back, lowered into her starting stance, and exploded forward.
THUD—THUD—THUD.
Her shoes hammered against the hardwood as she sprinted from baseline to baseline, slowing only after reaching the opposite end. She bent forward with her hands on her knees, catching her breath before straightening up with a determined look.
The rain continued pounding against the windows.
Sariyah wiped her forehead with the back of her hand, glanced down the empty court, and prepared herself for another rep.
She wasn’t letting a little rain ruin her training.
The rain keeps pounding against the windows, but I barely pay attention to it anymore.
I stand at the baseline, hands resting on my hips, breathing heavily after another sprint. My legs are starting to burn, but I know I’ve got more in me.
“Come on, Riyah… One more.”
I glance across the empty basketball court.
“Nobody’s here to make excuses for me,” I mutter under my breath. “So I might as well make this count.”
I shake my arms out and get back into position.
Honestly, training alone is kind of peaceful. No teammates talking, no distractions, no pressure from anyone watching. Just me, the court, and whatever I’m willing to put myself through.
I lower myself into my stance.
I didn’t come this far just to slow down now.
I take a deep breath.
“Ready…”
Then I explode forward again.
