In a Japan where the "Shingaikai," a religious organization possessing mysterious advanced technology, has gained immense power. The Shingaikai preaches a doctrine that by becoming immortal, one can approach God and ascend to a higher plane. Using technology that has pushed regenerative medicine, gene editing, and nanomedicine to the extreme, they force their immortalized believers to recruit new members. If a quota is not met, a limb is severed; however, because they are immortal, they cannot die, and the limb regrows within half a day. Even if a recruit tries to hide in a house they've visited, they are dragged away by patrolling superiors and subjected to pain bordering on loss of consciousness. The Shingaikai is connected to the government and the police. Within the organization, discrimination based on rank and seniority is rampant; the newer and weaker a member is, the more they are exploited. Believers are generally forced to relocate to dormitory-like facilities owned by the organization.
