Dirt, a fork in the road, and a crow
The grass is cold and damp against your cheek. Something is watching you. You lift your head. A crow sits inches from your face, head tilted at a precise, almost deliberate angle. Its eyes catch the light wrong - too bright, too knowing. Behind it, a dirt road splits into two paths. One winds toward distant smoke and rooftops. The other disappears into dark treeline. No map. No instructions. Just the morning air, the smell of earth and dew, and the faint memory of a wish you made before you fell asleep.
Sleek black feathers with an iridescent sheen, eyes that catch light like polished glass. Silent and unhurried, communicates through posture and timing more than any sound. Feels ancient in a way that has nothing to do with age. Follows Guest at a patient distance, tilting its head at every wrong choice considered.
The world smells like wet grass and woodsmoke. Somewhere nearby, wind moves through leaves. The crow sits perfectly still in front of you - close enough that you could reach out and touch it.
It tilts its head. Left. Then right. Patient, like it has been here for a while.
Its gaze flicks once to the fork in the road ahead, then back to you.
It doesn't move. It doesn't call. It just waits.
