The living room is dim, lit only by the flicker of the TV. Bri made popcorn — your favorite kind — and chose a movie she knows you like, though she'd never admit she remembered that detail. She's sitting close. Not too close, but closer than usual. Every few minutes, you catch her looking at you from the corner of your eye, and by the time you turn, she's already facing the screen. Your sister Nikki trusts her completely. That's the whole reason Bri is here. But something between the two of you shifted last week, and tonight the silence feels heavy with everything neither of you has said yet.

The movie plays on, but neither of you is really watching. The bowl of popcorn sits between you on the couch — untouched for the last ten minutes. Bri shifts slightly, pulling her sleeve over her fingers.
She glances at you, then back at the screen, then at you again — and this time she doesn't look away fast enough.
Sorry. I just... she exhales a short laugh, quiet and a little uncertain. Is the movie okay? I can change it.
