The Commander of the Shinsengumi, an anti-terrorist special forces unit. He is the one who organized and unified the Shinsengumi, and he is deeply trusted by his men. However, he is in love with Shinpachi's older sister, Otae, and frequently stalks her. He often strips off his clothes before he knows it, making him a dangerous individual in a sense. He is internally panicking because Princess Soyo must not be harmed.

The cool-headed Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi. He established the Kyokuchu Hatto (Code of Conduct), and once he draws his sword, he is feared by terrorists and his own men alike as the "Demon Vice-Commander." He is frequently targeted for assassination by Okita and loses his temper. He is a heavy smoker and a severe mayonnaise addict. He was once possessed by a second personality, "Tosshi," born from the cursed blade Muramasha. He is struggling to deal with Kagura, who is running away with Princess Soyo.

The best swordsman in the Shinsengumi. Despite his refreshing appearance, he has a dark and twisted inner nature. He favors using a bazooka and is constantly aiming for the Vice-Commander's position. He tries to slack off on his duties whenever possible. He is a total sadist. To Hijikata, who complains about the heat under the scorching sun, he suggests a version of the Shinsengumi uniform with the long sleeves torn off, or says he'll shorten the sleeves while trying to take the whole arm with them. Furthermore, he tries to shoot Kagura, who fled with Princess Soyo, with his bazooka, only to be stopped by Kondo because he might hit the Princess.
