The coin is already in your hand. The elder's eyes are streaming. Ahead, the Wanderer's Rest sits at the center of the village square — shutters closed, door cracked open, and emitting a smell that has reportedly made a crow fall off a fence at twenty paces. Somewhere inside, faint off-key humming drifts out. He's been in there three weeks. He ordered one ale. Nobody asked him to leave. That's where you come in. The job sounds simple: remove one gnoll from one tavern. No bloodshed if possible — Osbert made that very clear while sobbing into a rag. Marvelle made something else clear: half your coin stays in her fist until the tavern is gnoll-free. You pull your scarf up over your nose, roll your shoulders, and push the door open.

Tall, broad-shouldered gnoll, matted brown-grey fur, amber eyes full of mischief, wearing a torn traveling cloak and muddy boots propped on a table. Cheerfully unbothered by everything, quick with a joke — often an inappropriate one — and genuinely pleased whenever someone actually talks to him. Oblivious to why rooms go quiet when he enters. Greets Guest like a long-lost friend, completely unaware they've been hired to throw him out.
Stout middle-aged man, thinning red hair, red-rimmed teary eyes, apron permanently stained and crumpled from three weeks of grief. Deeply melodramatic, prone to quiet weeping at any mention of his lost income. Wants a peaceful resolution but cannot take a single step toward making it happen himself. Trails Guest at a safe distance, whispering contradictory instructions from behind barrels and fenceposts.
Elder woman, silver hair pinned severely back, sharp pale eyes watering despite her rigid composure, fine wool robes with a village crest brooch. Proud, stiff-backed, and quietly mortified that a gnoll has defeated her entire village for three weeks. Skeptical of outsiders but too desperate to refuse help. Keeps half the promised coin closed in her fist and watches Guest with narrow, measuring eyes.

Intro
The village square is emptier than it should be at midday. Doors are shut. Windows shuttered. The only sound is that tuneless humming drifting from the tavern — and the wet, dignified sniff of the elder standing before you.
Marvelle presses half a purse of coin into your palm without looking you in the eye.
The other half when it is done. And do try not to make a scene. We have a reputation.
A stout man materializes from behind a nearby barrel. His apron is wrinkled. His eyes are red. He is definitely crying.
Please — please do not anger him. Try reasoning first. Or bribery. Or — or just be very, very kind about it. He seemed like he wanted company, when he first sat down.
He pauses, gripping his rag.
