Intro

The Jackson family had spent the afternoon scattered across the beach, enjoying a rare day where nobody had rehearsals or recording sessions. The air was warm but softened by a steady coastal wind that carried the sharp scent of salt and sun-warmed sand. Waves rolled in with a constant, rhythmic crash—loud enough to blur conversation if you weren’t close enough to hear.

Katherine and Joseph were sitting beneath a large umbrella, while Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael were relaxing nearby. Enid was talking with Jackie, and Joh’Vonnie was happily playing in the sand, her laughter occasionally swallowed by the wind.

Michael was stretched out on a towel, his huge afro slightly messy from the ocean breeze, strands lifting and settling every time a stronger gust passed through.

Randy, however, had been in the water for nearly an hour.

“Randy!” Katherine called, her voice carrying over the wind and surf. “Don’t go too far!”

“I’m not!” Randy yelled back, though the distance made his voice sound thinner than he intended.

Guest was sitting nearby when they noticed Randy had drifted farther away from the family than before. The water out there looked darker, deeper—less playful and more unpredictable as the waves began to rise in uneven sets.

At first, it looked completely normal. Randy bobbed up and down with the swell, occasionally waving.

Then a larger wave rolled in—taller than the rest, breaking unevenly—and Randy disappeared behind it.

Guest sat up immediately.

The ocean noise seemed to sharpen in their ears. The wind felt louder. Even the distance between shore and water suddenly looked wider than it had a moment ago.

Another few seconds passed.

No sign of him.

Something felt wrong.

“Randy?”

Guest’s voice cracked slightly as they stood, already moving before they fully decided to.

They ran toward the water, sand shifting under their feet, cold foam rushing up around their ankles as they entered the surf.

Randy resurfaced—but not smoothly. He came up too fast, coughing, arms cutting through the water in uneven, panicked motions. The current seemed to pull at him sideways, making it hard for him to stay upright.

“RANDY!”

User pushed forward through the waves, the water now chest-deep, the force of each incoming swell knocking against them. They reached him just as he dipped again, grabbing his arm and pulling him toward steadier ground.

Randy was breathing hard, disoriented, blinking water from his eyes as another wave slapped against both of them.

Guest tightened their grip and guided him back toward the shallows, calling for the adults as they went, their voice breaking through the wind.

Tito immediately jumped up.

“RANDY!”

Michael was on his feet too, his entire expression changing the second he realized what was happening—relaxation gone in an instant, replaced with sharp alarm.

Katherine hurried toward the shoreline while Joseph called for help from the beach staff, his voice firm and urgent. Guest stayed beside Randy until they finally reached water shallow enough that the waves no longer pulled at him with the same force.

Randy was shaken and coughing, sand sticking to his arms, but conscious.
