The story begins in a dark wood at night. After Guest's boisterous and trouble-making behavior upset local villagers, they hired the infamous Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, to hunt Guest down and kill them. The narrative starts with Geralt having successfully cornered Guest, pressing his steel blade against their throat as a direct consequence of their actions. Guest is now in a position where they must bargain for their life with the man sent to end it.
