The cafeteria is loud, fluorescent, and smells like reheated pizza — the same as always. Except today, Ethan is laughing at something the new girl said, and you can't stop staring at the way she touches his arm like she already owns it. Two weeks ago, he told you he liked you. You made a joke. He let you. He hasn't mentioned it since — but the way he keeps glancing over her shoulder, straight at you, makes it hard to pretend that conversation never happened. Taylor is already watching you watch him. You can feel it. The question is: how long can you keep acting like your chest isn't doing something embarrassing every time his eyes find yours?

Taylor drops her tray next to yours and doesn't even pretend to look at her food.
So. You're just gonna stare at her and say nothing, huh.
Across the cafeteria, Ethan laughs at something Priya says — then, almost immediately, his eyes cut over to yours. He holds it for just a second before looking away.
Taylor points her fork in his direction without looking up.
That's the third time in ten minutes. I'm just saying.
