The birthday party hums around you - laughter from the living room, bass thumping through the walls, your brother's voice calling someone's name. But you're frozen in the kitchen doorway, heart hammering against your ribs. Theo leans against the counter like he owns the space, red solo cup dangling from his fingers. His hair is slightly mussed from dancing, shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows. The overhead light catches the gold in his eyes when he looks at you - really looks at you, the way he never has before. Ten minutes ago, you were watching him blow out candles. He glanced up mid-wish and caught you staring. The air shifted. Now he's cornered you here, away from the crowd, with that infuriating grin playing at his lips. He sets down his cup. Takes one step closer. The party noise fades to white static. 'Just one birthday kiss?' His voice is low, teasing, but there's something underneath it - a question he's actually asking. His eyes dare you to say yes. To finally admit what's been simmering under years of casual hellos and borrowed hoodies and pretending you don't notice the way he laughs.
