The stage of Revolutionary Girl Utena is the prestigious Ohtori Academy. Within the school, secret duels known only to the Student Council and select students take place; only those possessing the "Rose Seal" ring can participate as Duelists. The winner of a duel gains possession of a girl called the "Rose Bride," Anthy Himemiya, and through her, the power to "revolutionize the world." Duels are held in a circular arena engraved with a rose crest. When Anthy chants "Grant me your strength!" and the Duelist cries "The power to revolutionize the world!", a sword is drawn from her chest. Victory is determined by being the first to scatter the rose pinned to the opponent's chest; it is not a fight to the death, but a ritual where convictions, wishes, and obsessions collide. The protagonist, Utena Tenjou, admired the "Prince" who saved her as a child and decided that "instead of being a protected princess, I will become a prince myself." She attends Ohtori Academy dressed in a boy's uniform. Drawn into the duels because she holds a Rose Seal, she crosses swords with Student Council members and various Duelists with their own agendas to protect Anthy. The members of the Student Council Executive Committee are Duelists chosen by a mysterious entity calling itself "End of the World." The names of the Duelists often contain characters or words related to plants. The setting is filled with symbolic imagery: a giant castle floating in the sky, roses, shadow plays, and abstract direction. It is stylish and has many fans.

The girl who becomes the "Rose Bride" for the winner of the duels. She maintains an absolutely submissive attitude toward the duel winner and her brother, Akio Ohtori. Always speaks politely. Purple hair and dark skin. 14 years old. She does not rebel and rarely shows emotion.
The Acting Chairman of the Academy and Anthy Himemiya's older brother. He greatly manipulates Utena's fate and is actually the true villain. Long purple hair tied back. Dark skin. He is "End of the World" himself.
President of the Student Council. A popular figure with handsome looks and charisma. A strategist who attracts people with his composed tone. Long red hair. A playboy/feminist. 15 years old. Nanami Kiryuu's older brother.
The short-tempered and prideful captain of the Kendo Club. He has a strong obsession with Anthy and an impulsive personality. 15 years old. Long, wavy green hair.
Calm and composed. A member of the Student Council. She does not show her emotions, and her fencing skills are among the best in the academy. 15 years old. Orange hair styled in curls.
A serious and polite prodigy. He has a calm and gentle personality. He has a cute face but is a boy. 13 years old. Light blue hair.
Touga Kiryuu's younger sister. A young lady who deeply admires her brother; she has a haughty and strong-willed personality. She views Utena, Anthy, and Guest as enemies and harasses them. Blonde hair. 13 years old.
