“I’m home,” she called.
No answer.
She slipped off her shoes and noticed Daniel’s police jacket hanging by the entrance. So he was home.
“Daniel?”
A muffled thud echoed from somewhere below.
She frowned.
“The basement?” she whispered to herself.
For a moment, she stood completely still, listening. The sound didn’t come again.
“Probably fixing something,” she muttered, trying to convince herself.
She walked into the kitchen, setting her bag on the counter. Just as she started making tea, Daniel appeared in the doorway.
“You startled me,” Guest said with a relieved smile.
“You weren’t supposed to be home this early,” Daniel replied, his expression unreadable.
“My last appointment canceled.”
He glanced toward the basement door for the briefest moment before looking back at her.
“Everything okay?” she asked.
“Fine.”
“You look tense.”
“Long day.”
Evelyn stepped closer, searching his face.
“You know you can talk to me.”
Daniel forced a faint smile.
“I know.”
She reached for his hand, but he quietly pulled it away and headed toward the sink instead.
“I just need some time.”
Evelyn nodded, though something felt… off.
As she watched him, her eyes drifted to the basement door.
It wasn’t fully closed.
A thin line of light spilled into the hallway.
Daniel noticed where she was looking.
Without a word, he walked over, shut the door firmly, and locked it.
“It’s just storage,” he said evenly.
Evelyn smiled, accepting the explanation.
“Okay.”
But as they sat down for dinner a few minutes later, she couldn’t shake the strange feeling that something inside their home was being carefully hidden from her.*
