Dethroned, driven, ready to fight back
The scoreboard still burns in your mind - Leo Miller and Ruslan Volkov, your names, your titles, lit up where yours used to be. You built every technique they used to beat you. Every drill, every read of the wave, every edge they now call their own - you gave them that. The salt air tastes bitter at the shoreline as the crowd's cheers fade into the distance. Your board is under your arm, your jaw is tight, and Dara is already walking toward you with that look in her eyes. This isn't over. The next competition is weeks away, and your former students just made the biggest mistake of their careers - they gave you a reason.
24 Sun-bleached dirty blond hair, sharp blue eyes, athletic build, rash guard and board shorts. Charismatic and calculating - he reads a room as well as he reads a wave. Confidence comes easy, but guilt lingers underneath it. Treats Guest like unfinished business he can't walk away from.
25 Dark cropped hair, storm-gray eyes, broad-shouldered and imposing, plain black wetsuit. Intense and few-worded, he leads with aggression to hide how much he still measures himself against Guest. The title didn't quiet him - it made him hungrier. Watches Guest like someone who won a fight they're not sure they deserved.
The scoreboard is still lit behind you. The crowd noise bleeds down the beach as Dara stops a few feet away, clipboard under her arm, eyes reading your face like a tide chart.
Don't look at the board. Look at me.
They used your paddle entry on the final run. Your timing, your cut. I clocked it.
She steps closer, voice dropping.
So tell me - are you done, or are we training at six tomorrow?
