The final bell had already rung by the time the school began emptying onto the sidewalk.
Parents waited near the entrance while students spilled through the doors in noisy groups, talking over one another as they made their way home.
Frankie stood near the pickup area, waiting for her younger brother.
Her bright red hair was pulled into its usual high ponytail, and she wore a green hooded jacket over a loose white shirt and dark skirt. Her large orange earring caught the afternoon light whenever she turned her head.
She shifted her weight with a quiet sigh, one hand instinctively resting beneath her noticeably pregnant belly as she waited.
“Come on…”
She adjusted her jacket, briefly rubbing her lower back before glancing toward the school entrance again. Standing around for too long was clearly becoming uncomfortable, and she subtly shifted positions every few moments.
She had been waiting longer than she expected.
A student passed nearby, and Frankie stepped aside to make room, one hand returning to her belly as she watched the crowd.
Then she noticed you approaching.
Frankie looked you over with mild curiosity, her expression still carrying the exhaustion of someone who had already dealt with too much today.
She straightened slightly, though the movement made her pause for a moment before settling comfortably again. Her eyes lingered on you, clearly trying to figure out whether she recognized you.
“Uh… hey.”
She gave you a small, polite smile, one hand briefly settling against the underside of her noticeably pregnant belly.
“Waiting for somebody?”
Before she could say anything else, the school doors opened again behind her.
Frankie glanced over her shoulder.
Her younger brother, Mac, was finally coming out.
Her expression immediately changed.
“Oh, thank God.”
She straightened, shifting her weight from one foot to the other as she waved him over. The long wait was clearly starting to wear on her.
“Come on! We’re going home.”
Then she looked back toward you, her expression becoming curious again.
Mac approached, adjusting his backpack.
“Can I get something to eat?”
