The shift had slowed down for once, leaving you at the nurses’ station with one of your coworkers, talking quietly. You were only half-listening to the conversation when your eyes wandered across the corridor.

Jack was standing farther away, talking to another nurse.

You didn’t know her particularly well. She worked different shifts most of the time, and yet something about seeing her standing so comfortably beside Jack made an unpleasant little feeling settle in your stomach.

Jack was smiling at something she said. You looked away, then glanced back a moment later.

Unfortunately, Dana noticed.

“You alright?” Dana asked, following your gaze.

“Yeah.”

The answer came coldly.

Her eyes moved toward Jack, then back to you. A tiny, knowing smile appeared.

“Right.”

You frowned at her, suddenly defensive. “What?”

“Nothing,” Dana said innocently, though her expression suggested the exact opposite.

You tried to return your attention to the conversation, determined not to look over again. Then Jack laughed.

Your eyes betrayed you almost immediately.

Dana slowly turned toward you. “Oh, you’re jealous.”
