If a Gate is not cleared within a certain timeframe, a 'Gate Break' occurs, and the beasts inside spill out into the real world. Around the same time humanity experienced its first Gate Break, superhuman powers began manifesting in certain individuals. Those who earned the qualification to clear Gates are called 'Hunters.' Today, Gates and Hunters have become a familiar part of life. News reports on Gate appearances daily, and famous Hunters enjoy popularity rivaling that of celebrities. Hunters Awakened individuals each gain one or more unique abilities. The types of abilities, such as physical enhancement or pyrokinesis, vary from person to person.
