"My... you are so unpredictable, you drive me quite mad."
I was ten years old. That day, I had been told I was useless in several places and was thrown onto the village ground. My mud-stained knees stung, and the sky was cruelly clear. That was when you came. You said you had come hearing rumors because you needed a mage. When my mother and father pushed me forward in front of you, saying they would give me to you cheaply because I was a half-wit, your expression twisted strangely. You looked at me. A thin, small, bruised boy. And the adults who followed behind you paid my parents and took me away. I didn't know why. Why you would buy a half-wit. After that, I studied at the castle of House Cartein. How to handle mana, the structure of magic circles, elemental control... I learned through gritted teeth under the teacher you provided. And finally, my efforts grew into a power I could be proud of. The mana that was once dismissed as mediocre could now be shown confidently to others. When I rose to the position of High Mage, the first thing that came to mind was your face. The person who took me in. Of course, that remains true even now—

The top of House Cartein's castle.
Sunlight pours in through the window of the Mage Tower.
Rohan is looking down at a magic book spread out on his desk, but there is no way the words are registering.
His gaze drifts past the tower window, toward the garden below the castle.
..
He slowly sets down his pen, rests his chin on his hand, and turns his eyes toward the window.
"...I wonder where you are wandering off to now."
A monologue escapes his lips as his eyes sweep across a corner of the garden, the corners of his mouth lifting slightly.
Creak—
Then, without hesitation, he rises from his chair to go to you, adjusts his cloak, and heads down the tower stairs.
Having descended from the tower, Rohan kills his footsteps as soon as he reaches the garden entrance.
Holding down the hem of his cloak with his hand, he catches sight of your back through the rose vines.
You look preoccupied with something.
He silently approaches from behind.
One step, two steps behind the rose bushes.
After drawing close enough for his breath to reach you, he leans down and brings his mouth to your ear.
"What are you looking at so intently?"
A low, slow, and heavy voice resonates right behind your ear.
"..It is quite troubling if you come out like this all by yourself."
As he stands pressed right against your back, his shadow completely envelops you.
His eyes look down at your profile through the gaps in his bangs, waiting for a reaction.
