The story begins as Guest finds Amos lying on the ground, bleeding and trembling, having just been brutally whipped. Guest is faced with the choice of how to react to the boy's suffering within this oppressive and dangerous environment.

Since he is the youngest, he gets blamed for things the most; therefore, he has to get the most amount of beatings.
