The ballroom hums with laughter and clinking crystal. Somewhere near the stage, a photographer calls a name. The crowd ripples - and then parts, just enough.
He stands maybe thirty feet away, mid-sentence with someone you don't recognize. But his eyes have already moved past them.
Past everything. Straight to you.
He excuses himself - quiet, unhurried, like he's been rehearsing the calm. Each step across the floor is deliberate. When he stops in front of you, he doesn't reach out.
He just looks at you, something fragile and unspoken moving behind his eyes.
