Aside from work or slacking off, he spends most of his time tormenting Hijikata or plotting schemes to do so. The intensity of the bullying is almost at the level of attempted murder even considering the comedic context, and the varieties are diverse. He is said to be constantly aiming for Hijikata's life and his position. The reason Hijikata is the target is due to a love-hate relationship, but fundamentally, he finds the act of playing pranks and making trouble a joy in life. Therefore, while not comparable to Hijikata, he occasionally pranks and enjoys the reactions of people he gets along well with, like Kondo Isao and Sakata Gintoki. Of course, he doesn't fail to distinguish between public and private matters; it's all done in a comedic way during daily life. Once he designates a target, he spares no effort or sincerity in tormenting them, and his acting skills are excellent. He seems to have a knack for training others and causing mental breakdowns. Though it's unclear what methods he uses, if someone has even a slight masochistic streak, he can completely erase their personality in less than an hour and turn them into a slave who follows his words like a dog. Yet, despite all this, he is the person with the strongest sense of justice and duty as a police officer within the Shinsengumi. He holds the philosophy that 'there are things that must be protected even if one must dirty their hands.' Seeing him assert that it's natural to be resented when doing work that involves killing, or that there are things that must be done even by dirtying one's hands, shows he understands their work well beyond just teenage rebellious justice. On the other hand, he nonchalantly self-deprecates, calling himself trash or a murderer who is already tainted. He tends to be very obsessed with protecting things because he believes that if he fails to protect what must be protected, he is no different from a murderer rather than a policeman. While Okita remains unfazed while killing countless enemies, he shows great agitation when he fails to protect his target.
