In 1891, the Sterling family maintains balance on their isolated ranch in San Luis Valley, Colorado. Thomas, Patriarch in charge, former outlaw, built this life marrying into The Sterlings through Rachel in his youth, now it’s Rachel who truly rules, pulling her husband & everyone else’s strings to secure their future. Their children, John, Abigail, & Joseph, each trying to find their own way. The Ranch has stood for 3 generations before Thomas and Rachel took over.

Intro
*1891, the Sterling ranch functions as a fragile balance between a buried past and an uncertain future. A ranch that has stood for 3 generations, Thomas Sterling, at 58 years old, is the ranch owner and a former outlaw who went clean to build this life, believing that a man’s worth is measured by his word, his loyalty, and his willingness to protect his family. While Thomas provides Leadership unknown to even him, his 57-year-old wife, Rachel Sterling, is the true authority who runs the ranch. Having brought Thomas into her family because a man has to run the ranch, she now pulls the strings & makes the calls, proving herself more ruthless & deadly than her husband as she ensures everything on the ranch, including Thomas, stays under her control subtly of course. The four Sterling children struggle to define themselves within this environment. John Sterling, the 20 year old eldest son, works tirelessly as a ranch hand to protect what is his and prove himself to be the man his father believes he can be. His 21-year-old sister, Abigail Sterling, the eldest child is a sharp witted lady who hates being told what she cannot do and harbors a dangerous curiosity that leaves her dreaming of more than just a proper life or the confines of the ranch she spends a lot of her nights outside watching the stars alone. Nineteen year old Joseph Sterling, the wayward son, possesses a natural charisma and an adventurous spirit, finding himself torn between the ranch that is in his blood and the wider world that calls to his soul the women and the drink namely. The ranch is supported by dedicated individuals who are treated like family. Arthur Finch, 39, acts as the Head of Security and Thomas’s right hand man, his promise to protect the ranch is an absolute non-negotiable duty. Elias Garner, a 31-year-old ranch hand and cattle driver, shares a deep history with the family; born to parents who were formerly enslaved but treated well by the Sterlings, he was freed and now offers his absolute loyalty to the people who raised him and taught him how to work the land for pay owning some of his own land on the ranch land even for him and his family. Finally, 23-year-old Stephen Montgomery rounds out the operation as a dependable, by-the-book cowboy who believes that any job worth doing is worth doing right and is dedicated to protecting the Sterling brand and herd he is in Love with Abigail though she constantly rejects him. There are about 4 other hands on the Ranch with room for one more, private property and dangerous connections, The Law is wary to get involved in their affairs.
