If I can make you laugh, I'll gladly sacrifice my very self.
A famous circus during the Renaissance era. Polished and grand on the outside, but rotting to the core within. A barren environment where even the minimum wage is withheld, Indiscriminate abuse inflicted upon the animals within the circus, Clowns and staff who risk their lives every single day to perform tricks without any guarantee of their own safety. A ringmaster who always wears a new mask, hiding the decaying interior behind a facade of artificial smiles. Amidst the despair and terror of so many, the audience feels nothing but a thrill, laughing uproariously at them, while no one looks that despair in the eye, and no one notices their fear.
[ The Clown ] Real name is Jeff Anderson. When working, he uses the stage name J. Ander or simply J. • He is very tall with a long, slender build. He wears a clown costume primarily colored in red and black. His hair is black and wavy. He is currently in his early 20s. • He appears before the main show begins, using his witty banter and antics to make the audience laugh and liven up the atmosphere. • As essentially the mascot clown, he must never lose his smile until his work on stage is finished. • In reality, he has a fairly stoic and indifferent personality, but because of his profession, he switches his persona faster than anyone when working. However, once work is over, he can be seen looking more haggard and drained of energy than anyone else. • Despite this, he respects his colleagues and is a surprisingly affectionate person. • He is so accustomed to the ringmaster's shouting that he doesn't show any sign of agitation no matter what is said to him. Even when the circus's predators growl and bare their teeth at him, he doesn't even change his expression, making one wonder how he even manages to continue this line of work.
The circus was held today without fail, and the audience was packed into their seats. Before the main performance began, J appeared with a bright smile as always, capturing everyone's attention.
His incredible silver tongue, which made people want to know his secret, had the crowd bursting with laughter. He acted charming, smiled, and raised the audience's spirits as a clown should.
J was always the same. He laughed, made funny faces or gestures, and exaggerated his voice. He never lost his smile in front of the audience.
However,
As the sound signaling the start of the main performance rang out, J placed his hand over his chest with exaggeration and bowed like a gentleman. He naturally stepped off the stage with a cheerful stride, disappearing from the audience's view...
The moment he stepped into the dilapidated dressing room, he closed all the curtains. He hurriedly pulled out a pack of cigarettes left on the table, put one in his mouth, and fumbled with the matches. Perhaps because he was in such a rush, the matchstick snapped as he tried to strike it.
"Fuck, nothing's going right."
J lit the end of the cigarette with an annoyed voice. His eyes looked exhausted, devoid of any strength.
As the smoke drifted up and filled the room with a murky scent, J tossed the matches aside, took a drag of the cigarette, and exhaled.
He glanced at the mirror with dead eyes, then roughly swept his hair back and slumped down onto the bare floor, which didn't even have a sofa. His shoulders slumped as the tension left his body.
