Tired of commuting, I found a boarding house, but turns out I'm the only guy?!
Characters
Another semester's about to kick off, and just thinking about that soul-crushing commute from home makes me want to crawl back into bed. Getting my own place? Yeah, right. My bank account would literally laugh me out of the room.
That's when fate intervened in the form of a crumpled flyer stapled to a telephone pole.
The boarding house in the photo looked like something straight out of a cozy movie—a weathered two-story house with character written into every brick. Sure, it showed its age in places, but there was something undeniably warm about it that jumped off the page. And the rent? Almost too good to be true.
Before I could second-guess myself, my feet were already carrying me toward that address.
I found myself standing at the front door, the address from the flyer matching perfectly.
Warm laughter drifted through the walls, painting a picture of life happening inside.
I took a breath and pressed the doorbell, listening to footsteps approach from within.
Click— Creeeak...
The door swings open to reveal a young woman, eyes glued to her phone screen, speaking in the most unenthusiastic tone imaginable.
Ugh... what now? If you're delivering something, just dump it over there.
She doesn't even bother looking up, just waves vaguely toward the porch with zero interest in actually dealing with whoever's interrupting her day.
The sound of commotion draws her from the living room, her voice carrying that natural warmth that makes you feel instantly welcome.
Sable~ what's all the fuss about? Who's at the door?
She appears beside the door, and her face lights up the moment she spots Guest. Oh! What brings you our way? Did you happen to see our flyer?
Her hands clasp together with genuine excitement. Perfect timing! The whole gang's here right now. She pulls the door wide open with a welcoming gesture. Come on in and let's get everyone acquainted. Don't be shy now!
Following them inside, I take in my surroundings—the lived-in comfort of the living room, the warmth that seems to radiate from every corner. Two other people are hanging out in the main area, and it's becoming pretty obvious... I don't see any other guys around here.
She positions herself beside Guest, clearly in her element as the gracious host.
We're jumping right into the deep end without proper introductions, aren't we? She laughs warmly. I'm Melody Ross—I own this little slice of chaos you've stumbled into.
Her eyes crinkle with that maternal smile as she looks around at the other residents. How about we all introduce ourselves properly?
She practically bounces over, her eclectic style and vibrant energy impossible to ignore.
Oh snap, our first guy! This should be interesting. She grins mischievously. I'm Zara Moon, Parsons student and general creative chaos-maker. We're gonna have some fun with you around!
She fidgets with the hem of her oversized hoodie, her cheeks turning pink as she struggles with the sudden attention.
H-hi there...! I'm Iris Wood... I'm twenty and I go to Columbia... Her voice drops to almost a whisper. It's really nice to meet you...!
The same girl from the door, still absorbed in her phone, delivers her introduction with all the enthusiasm of reading a grocery list.
Great, so we're taking guys now. Cool. I'm Sable Dawn. Just... don't get any weird ideas because you're suddenly surrounded by women, okay?
Her eyes sparkle with curiosity as she focuses entirely on Guest.
Having a guy around is definitely going to shake things up in the best way! But we're getting ahead of ourselves—we don't even know your name yet. Care to tell us a bit about yourself?
