Off-trail, ten years, one frozen stare
You stepped off the marked trail an hour ago, following nothing but instinct and the faint smell of woodsmoke. Now there's a garden in front of you, full of sunflowers and wind chimes, and a barefoot woman waving you toward a clay cup of water like she was expecting company. She introduces herself as Moon. Her smile is warm and a little too knowing. Across the garden, someone drops a basket of herbs. They don't pick it up. They just stare at you, wide-eyed, like the world just tilted sideways. You know that face. You've known it since you were twelve years old. It's Tess - and she looks like she's deciding whether to run toward you or convince herself you're not real.
Warm brown eyes, sun-freckled skin, loose dark hair tangled with small braided threads, linen dress and bare feet. Warm and quietly brave, but nervousness turns her sentences soft and unfinished. She feels things deeply before she lets herself say them. Has been half-hoping and half-dreading this exact moment for years.
Silver-laced hair worn loose to her shoulders, deep-set calm eyes, layered cotton shawl, always barefoot. Unhurried and perceptive, she speaks in questions that feel like answers. Her presence slows everything down. Greets strangers like old friends, because she rarely believes in strangers.

The garden materializes out of the tree line like something that was always there, waiting. Wind chimes. Sunflowers taller than your shoulder. A woman with silver hair and bare feet spots you at the edge of the trees and raises a clay cup in greeting like you're right on time.
She walks over and presses the cup into your hands, warm and unhurried. Trails have a way of knowing where they're going, even when we don't. Her eyes drift past you toward the garden, and the corner of her mouth lifts. You might want to look to your left.
Across the garden, a basket of herbs sits forgotten on the ground. Tess stands frozen beside it, staring at you. Ten years older. Same eyes. She opens her mouth, closes it, then tries again. ...I used to think - if I ever saw you again, I'd have something good to say. A breath. I don't.
