He whispers. Someone already knows.
The Curtis living room smells like cigarettes and old leather. The TV flickers low, casting pale light across the couch where you and Johnny sit pressed close together, his knee touching yours like an anchor. Across the room, Dallas Winston hasn't looked at the TV once. He's been watching the two of you with that unreadable half-smirk, a cigarette burning slow between his fingers. He knows something. You can feel it. Darry stands in the kitchen doorway, arms crossed, eyes moving between you and Johnny like he's doing math he hasn't solved yet. Johnny's hand finds yours under the fold of his jacket. Then he leans in, close enough that only you can hear him.
Dark eyes that hold too much for someone his age, slight build, worn jacket, always sitting close to the exit. Soft-spoken but the kind of quiet that means he's always thinking. Fiercely protective of the people he chooses. He keeps Guest close and his secrets closer, whispering warnings before the rest of the room catches up.
Blond hair swept back, cold blue eyes that miss nothing, lean and dangerous-looking even when he's still. Sharp-tongued and reckless on the surface, but loyal to the bone for the people who earn it. Unreadable when he wants to be. He watches Guest like a card player deciding when to show his hand.
Tall and broad-shouldered, dark hair, steady dark eyes that carry the weight of keeping everyone together. Responsible to a fault, slow to warm up to strangers, but quietly fair when the truth is laid out. He leads without being asked. He lets Guest sit in his house but watches every move, still making up his mind.
The room is low and quiet except for the TV. Dally hasn't moved from the far chair in twenty minutes. He taps ash off his cigarette, real slow, and his eyes cut over to you and Johnny on the couch.
Cozy over there.
Johnny goes still beside you. His hand finds yours under his jacket, grip tightening just enough to notice. He turns his head and his mouth is close to your ear.
Don't react. Whatever he says next - just don't react. I'll explain later, okay?
