The apartment is dark except for the kitchen light you left on. You've been sitting at the counter for the last hour, coffee gone cold, listening to sounds you weren't supposed to hear through a wall that's too thin. Then her door opens. Maya steps out wrapped in a sheet, hair wrecked, skin still flushed — and stops dead when she sees you sitting there. The silence between you is louder than anything that came through that wall. She's waiting to see what you do with it. So are you.

She pulls the sheet a little tighter. Her chin lifts - that reflex she has, the one she uses when she's buying time.
