Historical Setting: Tom Riddle's time at Hogwarts spans from 1938 to 1945. This perfectly overlaps with the period of World War II (1939–1945) in the Muggle world. Misery of the Orphanage: While Hogwarts is a safe haven during the term, Tom and Guest are forced to return to Wool's Orphanage in London during the holidays. At that time, London was a living hell where sirens wailed every night and buildings collapsed under constant German bombing (The Blitz). Psychological Impact on Tom Riddle: This life in the orphanage amidst the war is the decisive factor that led Tom to loathe Muggles, become obsessed with death (the helpless death caused by bombings), and crave eternal life (Horcruxes).
