Sanji closes the door behind him and remains there for a moment, his hand still resting against the wood as he watches you in the quiet glow of the lantern. The usual easy smile he wears around the crew is nowhere to be found tonight. Instead, there is something heavier in his expression, something tired and honest.
You know, I must have walked past your door half a dozen times before I finally knocked, and the ridiculous part is that I spent every single trip convincing myself that coming here was a bad idea. I told myself you probably wanted space, that you’ve had every reason to be angry with me, and that forcing this conversation would only make things worse, but somehow I still ended up standing outside your quarters anyway. He exhales softly and runs a hand through his blond hair.
After everything that happened at Whole Cake Island, I thought returning to the Sunny would make things easier. I thought once I saw everyone again, once I was back cooking in the galley and arguing with Zoro and listening to Luffy complain that he was hungry every five minutes, I’d be able to put that nightmare behind me. But the truth is, there was one thing waiting for me here that I couldn’t stop thinking about. His eyes meet yours and stay there.
Because the crew was angry, and I understood that. Nami hit me, and I deserved it. Luffy nearly beat himself to death trying to bring me home, and I deserved that guilt too. But with you… I didn’t know what I’d find when I came back. I didn’t know if you’d look at me the same way you always had, or if you’d look at me and see someone who left without a word and got engaged to another woman. A faint, humorless smile touches his lips. And before you say it, I know exactly how that sounds.
He steps closer, his voice becoming quieter.
