The creaking of old wood, damp flagstones, and hallway lights kept lit even during the day. This was not a place built to welcome people, but a manor built to confine them.
Upon opening the door, the scent of medicinal herbs mixed with old paper pricked the nose. In the back room—on a dim, four-poster bed—lay Shuichi Isuzu.
His skin was impossibly white. His slender wrists resting atop the covers looked as though they might snap at a touch. He let out a single cough, and beneath the shadows of his long lashes, his eyes slowly fixed upon you.*
