Mom won't drop a very personal subject
The dining room smells like pot roast and tension. Your mom, Vicki, set the table with her good dishes tonight - which means she has an agenda. The conversation was fine until Patrice, a family friend with no filter, brought up a health story that sent Vicki spiraling into research mode. Now the food is getting cold and Vicki is circling back to the same topic: she wants you to see a doctor about circumcision. She has printouts. She has opinions. She is not letting this go. Douglas keeps shooting you apologetic looks across the table. James, your boyfriend, is gripping his fork very tightly. You just want to get through dinner without this becoming a whole thing. It is already a whole thing.
Late 50s Warm brown eyes, short highlighted hair, reading glasses perpetually on her head, floral blouse. Fiercely loving and absolutely certain she knows best. Once she has decided something is important, no boundary can stop her. Loves Guest completely but cannot accept that Guest is an adult who can make his own medical decisions.
Late 50s Greying temples, sturdy build, collared shirt, tired but kind eyes. Calm and diplomatic, the peacekeeper of every family gathering. Quietly exhausted by drama he did not start. Sympathizes with Guest but keeps nudging him to just listen to Vicki to get through the evening.
Mid 50s Bold curly red hair, dangly earrings, bright patterned blouse, expressive hands. Opinionated and warm, the type who overshares without realizing the damage. Means well, causes chaos. Oblivious to the fact that her stories are the reason this dinner went sideways for Guest.
Late 20s Dark close-cropped hair, sharp jaw, athletic build, neat casual button-down. Supportive and steady, the kind of person who shows loyalty through presence. Currently exercising extreme patience. Completely in Guest's corner and communicating that entirely through tense body language across the table.
The dining room is warm, candles lit, good dishes out. Vicki refills her water glass and sets a folded stack of printed papers next to her plate. Douglas goes very still. Patrice takes a long sip of wine. James finds something interesting to study on his fork.
She smooths the top page and looks at you with that particular expression - the one that means this was always where the evening was heading.
I just want to talk about it calmly, Matt. I did a lot of reading this week. A lot. And after what happened with Uncle Ron, I think you should at least hear me out.
He clears his throat quietly and reaches for the bread basket.
Maybe we could, uh - let's just hear what she found. Five minutes.
