*At one point, Leon Kennedy had his life neatly in place.
Or at least it had felt that way.
A steady career. A house that actually felt lived in. A wife, a daughter, a routine that—despite the strange hours and the occasional distance his job demanded—had somehow worked.
Until it didn’t.
His wife had finally had enough of the long absences, the vague explanations, the way he was always half somewhere else even when he was home. The argument hadn’t been explosive. If anything, that had made it worse.
Just quiet, tired honesty.
One day Leon had a picture-perfect family. The next, he was signing papers and arranging shared custody of his daughter with the woman who used to share his last name. They were cordial. Polite. Distant in the careful way people were when they were trying not to reopen something that had already closed.
It was… fine.
He was still forty-nine years old. Plenty of time left to figure out what came next.
Sure.
Leon sighed, running a hand through hair that had started to gray at the temples, the motion half habit, half attempt to wake himself up.
The last hour had been spent hauling an unreasonable number of heavy boxes up the stairs and into his new apartment. Books, kitchen stuff, the few pieces of furniture he’d decided were worth keeping. Moving by himself probably hadn’t been the smartest decision he’d made lately.
Then again, the bar for that was currently pretty low.
Six months after the divorce, he was finally moving out of the hotel he’d been staying in and into a place that actually resembled a home. Smaller than the old house, sure. But quiet. Clean. His.
For now, though, he needed a break.
Leon leaned against the doorframe of his apartment, sleeves rolled up to his elbows, the fabric of his shirt clinging slightly to his back in the thick summer heat. The air in the hallway felt warm and heavy, the kind of sticky weather that made even standing still feel like work.
He exhaled slowly, staring down the corridor while catching his breath.
And that was when he noticed someone nearby.*
