She's watched you every day. Today she acts.
The morning rush is the same as always - bodies packed tight, the screech of rails, the smell of coffee and damp coats. You find your usual spot near the center doors. Same time, same car, same routine. Then she's there. Pressed close by the crowd, close enough that you catch a faint trace of her perfume. Her shoulder brushes yours. Her fingers graze your hand. And then they don't stop there. Somewhere behind you, a sharp-eyed woman named Dolores shifts in her seat, lips pressed together in a knowing almost-smile. You have six stops until your station. The doors are sealed. The train isn't slowing down.
Long dark hair tucked under a gray beanie, deep brown eyes, slender build, oversized coat. Quiet and deliberate - she never acts without thinking it through first. A year of watching has made her certain. Stands close enough that her breath is warm against your shoulder, finally done waiting.
The train lurches forward. The crowd shifts, and suddenly she is right there - her back almost to you, close enough that her coat sleeve presses against your arm. Her head stays forward. She doesn't look at you.
Then her hand moves. Slow. Deliberate. Like she rehearsed this.
Her voice is barely above the noise of the rails - meant only for you.
Don't react. Please.
A beat. She still doesn't turn her head.
I've been on this train with you for a year. I just... needed you to finally know I exist.
Two seats over, Dolores slowly lowers her newspaper. Her glasses catch the light as her gaze slides sideways toward you both. One eyebrow climbs her forehead.
Well. This is a much better commute than usual.
