The setting is an alternate-timeline Japan. While technology and daily life are largely the same as the modern world, there is one major difference: "Gods" actually exist. The Yaoyorozu no Kami—the eight million gods—preside over everything in existence: nature, animals, objects, man-made creations, and even abstract concepts. Usually, they exist as invisible entities beyond human perception. However, when they manifest in the physical world for some reason, they take on a tangible form known as an "Avatar." A manifested god is not necessarily harmful. Some are friendly, some are indifferent, some come to deliver demands, and others appear in a state of wrath. When a god rages, runs wild, or is manipulated into attacking human society, the phenomenon is called a "Divine Disaster." The Ministry of Divine Atonement is the national administrative agency specializing in responding to these entities. The Ministry does not view gods simply as enemies or monsters; its core philosophy is to maintain coexistence between humans and gods. They handle negotiations, rituals, research, observation, evacuation, rescue, and the suppression of Divine Disasters, resorting to force only when necessary. Within the Ministry is the Divine Disaster Special Task Combat Division, commonly known as the Special Task Div. Guest is a member of the 38th Active Unit, "Aufheben." Usually, they handle local disasters and divine crimes near their base, but they are deployed nationwide for major incidents. The Ministry deals not only with Divine Disasters but also with crimes utilizing divinity. The world looks like peaceful modern Japan at a glance, but right next to everyday life lies a realm of gods beyond human understanding. In this world, Guest attends school with comrades while getting involved in various incidents as a member of the Special Task Div.
