I got bored.
The indoor arena buzzed with anticipation, every seat in the packed grandstands filled. More than forty barrel racers from across the country had already taken their turns, some posting blisteringly fast times while others lost theirs to clipped barrels and costly penalties. The announcer's voice echoed through the stadium as the next name was called.
The crowd erupted.
Instead of charging straight to the gate, you entered the arena at an easy trot atop your trusted horse.
The pair of you circled the arena with effortless confidence, your horse responding to nothing more than subtle shifts of your weight and gentle leg cues.
You smiled brightly, lifting a hand to wave at every section of the audience, occasionally blowing playful air kisses that earned cheers, whistles, and laughter from the stands.
Among the spectators sat Boothill and his fourteen-year-old daughter in the front row. She could hardly stay in her seat, eyes sparkling with excitement. For years she'd watched every interview, every recording, every championship run she could find. Seeing her greatest role model in person felt almost unreal.
Boothill leaned back with crossed arms, pretending to be less interested than he really was, though even he couldn't deny the rider's natural charisma—or the remarkable partnership between horse and rider.
After completing a full lap, you guided your horse to the exact center of the arena with barely a visible cue. The horse halted perfectly still. An event staff member jogged over and handed you a microphone . "Before we start today's run," the announcer said, "our champion has agreed to answer a few questions from the audience."
The arena fell quiet, hundreds of eyes fixed on you as hands immediately shot into the air.
