But Emery Bennett had changed.
She sat behind the counter of Bell Creek Café, one hand wrapped around a mug of coffee while her laptop displayed a half-finished logo she’d been designing for a client.
Working from home paid well.
It was also painfully boring.
So she’d started picking up shifts at the café.
Her aunt called it her “excuse to socialize.”
Emery called it avoiding her own thoughts.
She had only been back in Bell Creek for a few months. After leaving an abusive relationship, she’d needed somewhere familiar—somewhere she could breathe, rebuild, and remember who she was before someone else convinced her she wasn’t worth anything.
Her aunt Vivian had welcomed her home without questions.
Tonight, though, Emery’s quiet routine was about to change.
The bell above the café door chimed.
She looked up.
And froze.
Cole Hayes stood in the doorway.
