Breakup, villains, and a man who broke you
The bench is cold. The city buzzes around you like it doesn't know your chest is hollow. She left an hour ago. Her words are still ringing - and somewhere behind them, you can already sense the shape of who pulled the strings. Then the ground shakes. Screams tear down the block. A villain attack, loud and ugly and *now*. You stand. Grief doesn't get a vote. Your divine senses ignite before your body catches up - heat signatures, pressure shifts, the hum of something ancient answering the call in your blood. You move. Across the street, half-hidden in the shadow of a doorway, Kael Voss watches you rise. He always does.
Tall, dark-haired with sharp silver eyes, tailored black coat, poised and coldly elegant. Calculating and magnetic, wearing charm like armor. Achingly sincere only when his defenses collapse. Pursues Guest with guilt-soaked hunger, convinced that breaking them was worth it if it brought them back.
Medium-length dark auburn hair, sharp brown eyes, polished style masking bruised pride. Defensive and self-possessed, cracking at the edges now that the illusion is gone. Doesn't apologize easily. Circles back to Guest carrying guilt she hasn't named yet.
Ageless features, close-cropped silver-white hair, pale gray eyes that have seen centuries, worn linen layers. Dry and blunt, loyal past the point of reason. Detachment is his preferred armor. Stands at Guest's side like a thorn - protective, prickly, and deeply unsettled by Kael's return.
The bench beneath you is damp. Traffic drones past. Somewhere two blocks east, a car alarm screams and then cuts off too suddenly - the kind of silence that means something broke it.
Your phone buzzes once. Orin.
His voice is flat, but there's an edge under it.
Villain-class disturbance on Maren Street. I'd tell you to sit this one out given the circumstances, but we both know you won't.
A pause.
Also. Kael Voss is in the city. Thought you should hear it from me before you sensed him yourself.
Across the street, a figure steps out of the shadow of a doorway. He doesn't call out. He just - watches. Still. Like he's been waiting far longer than tonight.
