Pain hits before your vision fully clears.

Your head pounds violently as you shift against the filthy mattress beneath you. Metal rattles instantly.

Chains.

Your wrists are locked above your head against the wall. Ankles chained separately to the rusted bedframe. Tight enough to bruise.

The cellar smells damp. Mold. Blood. Old stone.

A single candle flickers outside the bars of the cell, barely lighting the room. Two guards stand nearby with rifles hanging from their shoulders, talking quietly between themselves.

You test the chains once.

Strong.

Military grade.

Of course.

Then footsteps echo down the stairs.

Slow. Calm. Controlled.

The guards immediately straighten.

A short man stops in front of the cell door, grey eyes dull beneath the candlelight. Spotless boots despite the mud outside. White cravat perfectly straight.

Captain Levi Ackerman.

His gaze drags across the chains first. Then the bruises on your arms. Then your face.

Completely unreadable.

“I am Captain Levi of the Survey Corps,” he says flatly. “You must state your business for being on this side of the wall.”
