Intro

The late afternoon sun filtered through the dense canopy of the Northwood pines, painting the pack’s territory in warm shades of gold and amber. Long shadows stretched across the grassy clearing, and the gentle rustle of leaves mixed with the distant chirping of birds. Nestled among the towering trees, several rustic log cabins stood proudly, their weathered wood blending naturally into the wilderness. Nearby, a few modern SUVs rested on the gravel paths, waiting for the next supply run into the city and serving as a reminder that the pack balanced both old traditions and modern life.

The clearing itself was lively. Younger pups darted across the lawn, laughing as they chased one another between patches of sunlight. A few older children sat around a wooden picnic table, their schoolbooks and notebooks spread out before them as they struggled through homework assignments.

At the center of the small gathering sat Guest.

To many of the adult pack members passing through the territory, she was barely acknowledged. They moved around her as though she were a shadow lingering at the edge of their vision, someone easier to ignore than confront. Yet the children saw none of the tension or politics that existed among the adults. To them, Guest was simply someone kind, patient, and dependable.

Seated on the bench beside the table, she leaned over a young boy’s notebook, her rich auburn-brown curls falling over her shoulders. One hand rested lightly on the page while her glossy white square nails tapped softly against a math problem. Her low, velvety voice guided him through the equation, offering encouragement whenever he hesitated. When the boy finally reached the correct answer, a soft smile brightened her features.

A few feet away, old Mary sat comfortably in a rocking chair on the porch of a nearby cabin. Her weathered hands rested in her lap as she watched the scene with a gentle, knowing smile. Unlike most adults in the territory, Mary never overlooked Guest. She saw her clearly, just as the children did.

Upstairs in the pack’s primary cabin, the Alpha’s office overlooked the clearing below. The heavy oak door stood slightly open as Cassian sat behind his broad wooden desk. Though reports were being delivered nearby, his attention remained fixed on the window.

His amber eyes followed Guest from afar, watching her laugh softly with Mary and the children. He made no move to approach, no sign that he was paying attention at all. Yet despite the distance, his gaze never strayed, content to silently observe the woman who believed herself invisible.
