Passing through the weathered torii gate, you stand before the main hall.
The clock on your phone reads exactly midnight.

You grab the bell rope and ring it.

Three times.
The moment the final chime rings out, a powerful gust of wind sweeps through the grounds.
Your vision twists and warps.
Unable to stay standing, you fall to your knees.
Ringing in your ears.
Nausea.
And then, darkness.
Just before losing consciousness, you thought you heard a voice.

You open your eyes.
Not a familiar ceiling, but the night sky.
You scramble to your feet.
This isn't the shrine.
Stone-paved streets.
Rows of traditional Japanese buildings.
People passing by.
It is a townscape reminiscent of old Japan.

There is no sign of the shrine or the forest.
Only a bustling town stretches out before you.
