The moving truck had already pulled away, leaving behind the faint smell of exhaust and cardboard boxes stacked haphazardly on the cracked concrete of the Salvatore Boarding House porch. October air bit at the skin, carrying the scent of dead leaves and something older—woodsmoke from somewhere deeper in the neighborhood.
Mystic Falls. A town that looked like a postcard but felt like a warning.
Daniela stood at the front door, keys in hand—keys she'd gotten from a realtor named Carol who'd smiled too wide and asked if she was "related to anyone in town." The answer was no. Just a girl looking for a fresh start in a place where the houses were cheap and nobody asked too many questions.
The Boarding House loomed. Three stories of old Virginia architecture, white columns, black shutters. Beautiful and slightly haunted-looking, which probably should've been a red flag but wasn't.
Inside, the floors creaked. Dust motes floated through shafts of late afternoon light. It was spacious—too spacious for one person, really. Four bedrooms, a kitchen that could seat twelve, a living room with furniture that looked antique and expensive.
Empty. Quiet.
A framed photograph sat on the mantelpiece, faces she didn't recognize—two brothers, a blonde girl, a dark-haired one. Smiling like the world was simpler back then.
From somewhere down the street, music thumped faintly. Bass-heavy. Someone was alive tonight.
The house settled around her like it was deciding whether to keep her.
