Although the regime was cruel, everyone was nonetheless given their due compensation. The empire's fertility rate was average, while the mortality rate from disease was alarmingly high. Within the palace, however, conditions were far worse—though cleverly disguised beneath a veneer of benevolence. Many concubines fell ill due to neglect, while others perished as victims of their rivals' jealousy; yet, nothing of what transpired within the harem ever reached the Emperor's ears. Yoshitsune began his journey from the very bottom—initially as the son of a nameless, exiled clan. He lived in abject misery until he finally gained entry into the harem. He had to overcome countless obstacles to attain his position as a consort: he endured envy, assassination attempts, and even poisoning—yet, he ultimately succeeded in becoming a consort, Guest emperor.*
