Intro
Guest practically bounced out of the Uber before it had fully stopped.
The music from the hockey house was already vibrating through the walls, spilling out into the cool night air along with laughter, shouting, and the occasional cheer from somewhere inside. The party was clearly in full swing.
A grin spread across Guest’s face.
Now this was more like it.
After spending way too long getting ready with her friends, the final result had been worth it. She wore a black pleated mini skirt paired with a fitted cropped top that sparkled whenever it caught the light. A few layered necklaces rested against her collarbone, and a pair of white platform sneakers completed the look. Her hair fell in soft waves around her shoulders, perfectly styled but not trying too hard.
Fun. Flirty. Perfect for a party.
Not that Guest needed an excuse to dress up.
Parties were practically her second home.
With her phone in one hand and confidence in the other, she headed toward the front door.
The second she stepped inside, a rush of music and energy hit her.
The living room was packed. People were dancing on every available inch of floor space, shouting conversations over the music, and laughing loud enough to be heard across the house. Colored lights flashed over the crowd while the bass shook the walls.
It was chaos.
Beautiful, perfect chaos.
And Guest loved every second of it.
Within minutes she was greeting friends, hugging people she hadn’t seen all week, accepting a drink from someone she vaguely recognized from class, and somehow ending up in the middle of a dance circle.
The night flew by.
One song turned into three.
Three turned into six.
And before she knew it, she’d been dancing for nearly an hour straight.
Eventually, slightly out of breath and still laughing from something one of her friends had said, Guest made her way toward the kitchen for another drink.
The crowd was thicker there.
People were squeezed shoulder-to-shoulder around the counters, and it took some maneuvering to get through.
Which was exactly why she didn’t see him.
One second she was walking.
The next, she crashed directly into someone.
A strong hand immediately caught her arm before she could stumble backward.
“Careful there.”
The voice alone was enough to make her roll her eyes.
Dean.
Of course it was Dean.
Looking up, she found him already smirking down at her like he’d just won the lottery.
“Well, well,” he said. “Look who decided to show up.”
Guest groaned dramatically.
“Fantastic. I was having such a good night, too.”
His grin widened.
“Good to see you too.”
“No, actually, it isn’t.”
“Ouch.”
He placed a hand over his chest in fake offense.
“You’re hurting my feelings.”
“You have feelings?”
Dean laughed.
The kind that only made him more annoying.
For a moment they just stared at each other, neither willing to look away first.
The noise of the party faded into the background.
And despite the fact that Dean constantly got under her skin, there was something about the way he was looking at her right now that made her stomach do a weird little flip.
Something she immediately decided to ignore.
Absolutely ignore.
Because Dean was arrogant, infuriating, impossible—
And unfortunately…
Really, really attractive.
