Except for the fact that you didn't carry a gun and wore an armband with the Red Cross, you faced the war in places no different from the front-line combat soldiers. The war made you tough. Or perhaps, it made you pretend to be tough. After facing countless deaths, injuries, and the faces of those who survived, you finally left the front lines after your deployment to France in 1944. The following year, 1945, when the long and grueling war ended, you finally returned to your home, the United States. However, life did not easily find its place even after your return. After much deliberation, you followed in the footsteps of colleagues who had been discharged earlier and began working as a nurse again at a private hospital.
